A lecture by Dr. Charbel Darido from the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre in Melbourne, as part of a mentoring visit

Category: Events, I.1.1/IV.1.1, Results

You are invited to attend an open lecture titled “Breaching «barriers» in head and neck cancer development and treatment”, which will be given as part of a mentoring visit organised under Action I.1.1/IV.1.1 “Mentoring Programme”.

At the invitation of the Institute of Genetics and Biotechnology WB UW team, the lecture will be presented by Dr. Charbel Darido – the team leader and laboratory manager from the Cancer Research Department at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre in Melbourne, Australia.

Dr. Darido completed his MSc in endocrinology and physiology, followed by a PhD in colorectal cancer studies at the University of Montpellier, France, in 2008. This was followed by two postdoctoral fellowships at the Royal Melbourne Hospital in the laboratory of Professor Stephen Jane. In 2016, Dr. Darido established a comprehensive, dynamic head and neck cancer research programme at the newly-established Peter Mac Cancer Institute. This is the only fundamental research programme in this area at the institute.

Dr. Darido’s team is investigating the cancer-initiating lesions in head and neck cancer, as well as the oncogenic drivers of metastatic oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Dr. Darido has received international recognition for his work on preclinical human and animal models of OSCC, and for the application of these models to study the biological mechanisms responsible for invasive diseases and identify new therapeutic targets for medications. The ultimate goal of his work is to translate the results of basic research into new approaches for the prevention and treatment of head and neck cancers, which have high morbidity and mortality worldwide.

Dr. Darido has received research grants from both Australian (National Health and Medical Research Council – NHMRC; Victorian Cancer Agency – VCA) and foreign sources (American Institute for Cancer Research – AICR). He was the inaugural recipient of the prestigious Clare Oliver Memorial Fellowship and a Mid-Career Victorian Cancer Agency Fellow. Recently, Dr. Darido secured funding from the Australian Government’s Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF) programme to support the transfer of his head and neck cancer research findings into clinical practice.

The lecture is part of a mentoring visit under Action I.1.1/IV.1.1 “Mentoring Programme” as part of the “Excellence Initiative – Research University” (IDUB) Programme.

The lecture will take place on Tuesday, 21.03.2023, 12:00-13:30 at the Faculty of Biology, UW, ul. Ilji Miecznikowa, room 102B.

The staff and students at the University of Warsaw and all those interested are invited to attend!
