The Kingdom of Urartu and Metsamor: luxury pottery, technology and trade links

Category: Results

This paper presents the results of interdisciplinary research into pottery from Metsamor, a settlement located in the Ararat Valley, in the context of the influence of the Kingdom of Urartu. It discusses both the history of the site and the role it played following the Urartian conquest in the 8th century BC. Particular attention is paid to the analysis of the pottery, its composition, production technology and the origin of the raw materials. The text reveals what petrographic, mineralogical and geochemical studies can tell us not only about the pottery, but also about the economy and technology of Caucasian pottery-making in the Iron Age.
