Mentoring visit lecture – prof. Julie Wartell, University of California, San Diego

Civil City Lab and the Robert Zajonc Institute for Social Studies would like to invite to a lecture by Prof. Julie Wartell entitled “Security and Crime Prevention through Urban Planning”.
Julie Wartell has been involved in applied research in the field of crime prevention, the use of geographic information systems (GIS) in urban planning, and the design of safety-promoting urban spaces for over 25 years. She is the author and co-author of over 40 academic publications, has delivered training to police forces, prosecutors and local communities around the world, and has served as a National Institute of Justice Fellow.
During her lecture, the expert will explain how thoughtful spatial planning and architectural design can reduce crime and enhance the sense of safety in urban spaces – drawing on the CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design) concept and her experience of working with American cities and local communities.
The event, organised as part of Action I.1.1/IV.1.1 “Mentoring Programme”, will take place on 27.08.2026 at 17:00 at the Robert Zajonc Institute for Social Studies, Room 3.9 in the Banach 2D building (Faculty of Psychology, University of Warsaw).
