On April 23, 2024, at 12:00 PM, a ceremony will take place at the Kazimierzowski Palace on Krakowskie Przedmieście to confer an honorary doctorate upon Professor Baron François Englert. The distinguished physicist, along with Peter Higgs, was awarded the Nobel Prize in 2013 for the groundbreaking discovery of the Brout-Englert-Higgs mechanism, which is the foundation of the modern theory of elementary interactions, known as the Standard Model.
As a professor at the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) and a prominent member of the Service de Physique Théorique, he has also contributed to statistical physics, quantum field theory, cosmology, string theory, and supergravity, making him one of the most influential thinkers in the field of natural sciences. He was awarded the European Physical Society Prize in 1997 and the Wolf Prize in 2004. He also received the Sakurai Prize awarded by the American Physical Society (APS) to particle theorists.
On April 25, at 12:00 PM, an open meeting with Prof. Englert will be held in auditorium 0.06 at the Faculty of Physics, UW. The meeting will include screening the movie “Rebel and a Nobel Prize Winner” followed by a discussion with the Nobel Laureate!
