How did pre-war authors imagine the future of Poland and the world? What problems they raised are still relevant today? – Dr Jerzy Stachowicz and Dr Agnieszka Haska talk about science fiction literature before 1939.

The podcast “How it (couldn’t) be” is the result of research conducted by Dr Stachowicz from the Faculty of Polish Studies between 2019 and 2022 on Polish science fiction literature in a cultural studies perspective. Their premise was to look at SF as literature entangled in ideological, political and modernising processes, and often written by people involved in public life and participating in the creation of a national imaginary of the Poland of expectation – an imaginary international superpower, military and political power.
