The Rector of the University of Warsaw Established the Institute for Advanced Studies

The Rector of the University of Warsaw has established the Institute for Advanced Studies. The new all-University unit will begin its operations on 1 January 2026.

Professor Alojzy Z. Nowak, Rector of the University of Warsaw, issued Ordinance No. 164 establishing the new all-University organizational unit — the University of Warsaw Institute for Advanced Studies.

Continuation of the Institute for Advanced Studies

The newly established Institute for Advanced Studies is a continuation of a virtual unit operating under Action I.3.8 of the Excellence Initiative – Research University programme. The IAS was initially created as a platform for supporting innovative and interdisciplinary research projects and fostering collaboration among scholars from different disciplines. The establishment of the Institute for Advanced Studies ensures the continuity of such activities on university-wide scale and gives them a permanent organizational framework within the University of Warsaw.

Mission and Objectives

According to the regulations attached to the ordinance, the mission of the Institute for Advanced Studies is to enhance the impact of the University of Warsaw’s research on the development of global science. The Institute will:

• support innovative research with high potential and international relevance,
• initiate and coordinate interdisciplinary projects,
• create a platform for scientific exchange, including meetings, seminars, and conferences,
• develop programmes for researchers, including fellowships and initiatives supporting research mobility,
• promote the University’s scientific achievements and strengthen its visibility both nationally and internationally.

The establishment of the Institute for Advanced Studies is part of the University of Warsaw’s strategy to develop as a research university of international standing. The Institute will provide a collaborative space where scholars from various fields can undertake ambitious research projects, develop innovative ideas, and build lasting partnerships with research centres in Poland and abroad.
