Category: Events, I.1.1/IV.1.1
The UW Faculty of Biology would like to invite you to an open lecture entitled. “Immune regulation of metabolic homeostasis by helminths and their molecules”, which will be given by Dr Bruno Guigas.
Host: Dr. hab. inż. Anna Zawistowska-Deniziak, Institute of Experimental Zoology, Faculty of Biology, University of Warsaw
Date: March 18, 2025
Time: 15:30 (CET)
Location: Faculty of Biology, University of Warsaw, Room: 102B
The worldwide prevalence of obesity and type 2 diabetes is reaching epidemic proportions, not only in Western societies but also in developing countries. Among various pathophysiological underlying mechanisms, the obesity-associated metainflammation contributes to the development of insulin resistance, highlighting the role played by the immune system in the regulation of metabolic homeostasis. Helminth parasites are masters at manipulating host immune responses. Remarkably, landmark epidemiological and pre-clinical studies have recently reported that chronic infection could improve insulin sensitivity and glucose/lipid metabolism in both humans and rodent models of type 2 diabetes.
During this seminar, I’ll present some of our works in the emerging field of immunometabolism and discuss the idea that modulation of immune response in metabolic organs, notably using parasite-derived molecules, could constitute an attractive new therapeutic approach for metabolic diseases.
Dr. Bruno Guigas is a molecular biologist with extensive expertise in the pathophysiology of metabolic disorders. His research group at the Leiden University Medical Center (The Netherlands) leads projects within the field of immunometabolism, aiming to identify new druggable molecules and/or molecular targets involved in the immune regulation of metabolic homeostasis in the context of obesity, MASLD/MASH, type 2 diabetes, and infection.
He is involved in several international collaborations on multidisciplinary projects addressing metabolic disorders. Dr. Guigas has co-authored over 120 publications and serves as an external reviewer for multiple scientific journals (>180 publications) and national/EU funding agencies (>160 grants). He is also a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of Valbiotis, a French biotech company developing plant-derived molecules for the prevention of metabolic syndrome.
Join us for this insightful seminar to explore how parasites and their molecules could pave the way for novel therapeutic approaches to metabolic diseases!
This event is prepared as part of the mentoring visit under Action I.1.1/IV.1.1 “Mentoring Programme”.
