The Lives and Ecologies of Images: Anthropocene, Mediocene, Ecocene
Date: Thursday, May 22, 2025
Time: 9:45 AM
Location: Room 3.014, Faculty of Modern Languages, University of Warsaw
In this lecture, Prof. Adrian Ivakhiv will present key ideas from his forthcoming book The New Lives of Images, an ambitious exploration of the power and politics of imagination in the digital age. Reassessing the role of images across historical and contemporary contexts, Ivakhiv offers a provocative framework for understanding how digital media are transforming our visual cultures, affective economies, and ecological awareness. Engaging with diverse artists and media—from Hilma af Klint and Edward Burtynsky to Sun Ra, Alexis Pauline Gumbs, and YouTube animal videos—the book traverses topics such as animacy, prophecy, digital enchantment, and the utopian impulse in the “climate-colonial Anthropocene.”
Filmmakers’ Roundtable
On Ecology in a Non-Ecological Medium

A roundtable discussion with directors working across minority-language cinemas of the Iberian Peninsula:
- Álvaro Gago (Galicia)
- Eneko Muruzabal (Basque Country)
- Manel Raga (Catalonia)
Moderated by Maria Boguszewicz, the conversation will reflect on the possibilities and limitations of ecological storytelling in contemporary cinema. How can film engage with ecological thinking while operating within non-ecological structures of production, distribution, and reception?
