Mentoring visit lecture – prof. Luis Inostroza, Mendel University in Brno

Category: Events, I.1.1/IV.1.1

The Faculty of Geography and Regional Studies would like to invite you to a lecture “Bringing ecosystem services science into spatial planning – theory and practice” by Professor Luis Inostroza, Mendel University in Brno.

The last IPBES global assessment has identified land use and cover change (LUCC) as one of the five drivers of biodiversity loss. LUCC is a process that takes place within established spatial planning, in a context where the value of nature’s contributions to people remains marginal in decision-making, underpinning a socio-ecological crisis that extends far beyond climate change. Transformative change is necessary to establish biodiversity as a fundamental component of human well-being. Here, ecosystem services science can provide a robust conceptual framework to understand the extent of our dependency on healthy ecosystems.

In this lecture will be covered the fundamentals of ecosystem services science, to understand its ecological roots, its main characteristics, and to place them in a context where the existing body of knowledge on ecosystem services can help to reformulate the foundations of spatial planning towards a biodiversity-inclusive spatial planning system.

The event, prepared as part of the mentoring visit under Action I.1.1/IV.1.1 “Mentoring Programme”, will be held on on Tuesday, November 18th, at 9.45-11.15, room 107 at the Faculty of Geography and Regional Studies (Krakowskie Przedmieście 30).
