Exhibition on Polish research in Old Dongola

Category: Events, II.4.1

In front of the Museum of the University of Warsaw on Krakowskie Przedmieście Street, until 28 September 2025, you can see an exhibition presenting the history of Polish-Sudanese research at one of the most important archaeological sites in Sudan – Old Dongola.

The exhibition is part of the celebrations marking the 60th anniversary of research conducted by the University of Warsaw’s Polish Centre of Mediterranean Archaeology in Old Dongola. It is a unique opportunity to learn about the discoveries made so far by Polish and Sudanese archaeologists. The exhibition consists of 15 double-sided panels. One side presents the history of Old Dongola, as well as the history of Polish-Sudanese research at this site. The other side features the most impressive artefacts: medieval wall paintings from Dongola churches and monasteries.

The celebrations, organised under the honorary patronage of the Rector of the University of Warsaw, Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak, began on 18 September in the Column Hall of the Faculty of History at the University of Warsaw. The events are co-financed by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Poland as part of the task “Internationalisation of the research results of the archaeological stations of the University of Warsaw” and from the University of Warsaw IDUB programme: Action II.4.1.
