POB III: The Challenge of Petabytes
The research area “The Challenge of Petabytes” is dedicated to the development of methods for gathering and analysing big data sets – the understanding and interpretation of which are integral to the effective use of modern technologies. The improvements in molecular techniques and medical imaging which have been observed in recent years will enable the collection of large amounts of biomedical data. The rapid development of tools for assimilating various types of environmental signals can supply modern robots with essential information for maintaining their proper functions. Similarly, extensive bank reports broaden our knowledge of the efficiency of financial markets and serve to assess credit risk. As well, tracking the behaviour of website users provides information of great significance to commerce or network security. However, it should be remembered that in all these applications, there is a deluge of information. It is therefore necessary to develop new mathematical methods and efficient IT tools that will enable and facilitate data selection and use.

Activities
Knowledge transfer and meta-learning
This activity will create a team to manage knowledge transfer in the field of image processing and robotics and to develop meta-learning techniques. Initially, the researchers will focus on the interaction of robotic arms with everyday objects, but in the longer term, drones and other types of robots will also be studied. — detailed description

Development of the statistical group
The Statistical Group is a research team focused on problems related to the analysis and processing of large amounts of data; its development and funding will be provided under this activity. That will allow for the recruitment and education of young scientists, so that in the future they will be able to join the scientific staff at the University.
The second group that will benefit from this project will be the Robot Learning Group, focused on the challenges of meta-learning and knowledge transfer methods. — detailed description

Thematic research programmes
To create optimal conditions for dynamic scientific development through intensified international cooperation, the ‘Thematic research programmes’ activity has been proposed. Through comprehensive support – consisting of temporary employment for recognised scientists, the organisation of schools and conferences at the University of Warsaw, as well as short visits by outstanding foreign scientists – it intends to facilitate and accelerate the rapid development of the most important areas of knowledge related to large data analysis. — detailed description

Advanced Master’s degree
The activity called “Advanced Master’s degree” aims to make the study program as attractive as possible for the most talented and motivated students. Creating a system of double doctorates

Olympic scholarships
