Second edition: Open call for applications of research modules to the Central European Social Survey

Category: Calls for proposals, II.3.5

We announce the second open call for research module applications for the Central European Social Survey, financed by the University of Warsaw as part of the “Excellence Initiative – Research University” Programme.

The main goal of the activity is to create a unique data resource on the societies of Central and Eastern Europe and the most important social processes which are taking place in the region. The data are collected as part of repeated surveys, conducted in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. As part of the project, two two-wave panel studies were planned on nationwide, representative samples. The first panel study took place in 2021 and 2022. The second study is planned for 2025.

This announcement concerns a competition for modules as part of two surveys in 2025.

The research will be conducted online, via research platforms on comparable, representative samples in Poland, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Germany, Austria, and Hungary. The cyclical form of surveying (sequential comparisons between both studies, as well as panel comparisons between the two waves of both studies) will allow for understanding the regional transformations, will focus on current social challenges, and will constitute a unique source of knowledge for researchers from many university disciplines.

The study will include a core, consisting of basic demographic and socio-economic variables, as well as thematic research modules which are proposed by independent teams from various units at the University of Warsaw.

We encourage researchers who are interested in taking part to submit modules for inclusion in the questionnaire. Such a module may consist of several variables (maximum 5), not including technical variables and broadly-understood metrics containing variables describing the demography, economic situation, and political views of the respondents.

Modules may be submitted by a researcher employed at the University of Warsaw (head of the team that is proposing the module). The team may include researchers from outside of the University of Warsaw, but the publications based on the results of the survey should be affiliated with the University of Warsaw. Priority will be given to modules created in international cooperation, particularly with universities belonging to the 4EU+ Alliance.

Instructions for submitting modules to the Central European Social Survey

  1. Modules can be submitted using the online form until 24.03.2024.
  2. Link: https://warsawpsy.eu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_bEGIEX45oQOTeE6
  3. The content of the submission should include:
    1. Contact details of the applicant (including affiliation with the University of Warsaw)
    2. Description of the module (3,000 characters, i.e., approximately one A4 page of standard text). The description should include a general overview of the research project, research questions, and hypotheses.
    3. Answers to a series of questions regarding the nature of the proposed questions and the form of participation in the project.

The modules will be assessed by the Action II.3.5 team, composed of psychologists, sociologists, survey methodologists, and migration researchers. In the event of modules whose subject matter goes beyond the competences of the team, external experts from a given discipline will be invited to provide an assessment.

The following criteria will be taken into account when evaluating the modules:

  1. The substantive value of the project (main criterion).
  2. The ease of implementation of the module into the entire study (quality of questions, linguistic / cultural adaptation, comparability).
  3. The impact of the module on the length and complexity of the questionnaire.
  4. Preference will be given to projects conducted in international cooperation, especially within the 4EU+ Alliance.
  5. Competences of the project team in the area of survey research.
